About

TOKEN is a Brooklyn based studio that provides design, development and manufacturing solutions for architects, designers and curious individuals. Observation and a careful consideration of function, structural ingenuity, material dynamics and aesthetic coherence are all important characteristics of our practice.

Being curious individuals ourselves, we began developing TOKENnyc in 2009. The result is a collection of historically reverent, handcrafted furniture and lighting products; a distilled representation of TOKEN which aims to provide elements for purposeful, considered living.

ABOUT THE FOUNDERS
Will Kavesh and Emrys Berkower met as undergraduates at Alfred University in 1992. After graduating in 1996 and going on to individually pursue art making and design careers, Emrys and Will reconnected in 2005 and began collaborating on various projects, specifically lighting and furniture design. This led to the formation of the design/build studio TOKEN in 2007 which also serves as a platform for supporting and participating in the rich community of locally based designers and fabricators.

WILL KAVESH
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Alfred University, Will relocated to California to work as an artist and machinist. After four years, he returned to academia to pursue his interests in electronics and mechanics, earning his Masters degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002. Will’s graduate studies and experience led to a two-year teaching fellowship at the Yale University School of Mechanical Engineering. Since moving to New York City in 2002, he has developed electromechanical systems for artists and product developers. Simultaneously he was designing and developing furniture and fixtures for NYC-based designers and working with architects on custom solutions. Prior to founding TOKEN, Mr. Kavesh worked at fashion company Rogan designing their home line Rogan Objects, as well as the company’s retail spaces.

EMRYS BERKOWER
After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University, Emrys went on to work as a glass artist and designer. Throughout his career he has focused on modern adaptations of 17th-century-Italian-glass-making techniques and mid-century modern design practices stemming from Italy and Scandinavia. This focus has led to a natural progression and interest in interiors, furniture and fabrication. For over a decade Emrys has worked with artists, designers and educators to produce a wide range of decorative and functional table objects including lighting and sculpture. Emrys has concurrently demonstrated, educated and performed glass making at renowned institutions including the Corning Museum of Glass, Wheaton Village, and Urban Glass.
